Chevrolet’s Chevelle was a popular model in the 1960s and 1970s. It was introduced in 1963 as a 1964 model and went through three generations before being discontinued in 1978. The Malibu then replaced the Chevelle as the top trim level. The Chevelle was known for its midsize design and was offered in various body styles including hardtops, coupes, convertibles, sedans, station wagons, and coupe utility. This particular second-generation Chevrolet Chevelle SS coupe from Indiana has only 1,550 miles on it and underwent extensive refurbishment around ten years ago. The previous owner claims it is a factory SS with a factory four-speed transmission and is an original triple-blue car.
The second-generation Chevelle underwent a redesign that included a more rounded and sculpted appearance, front fenders that tapered, and the characteristic ‘long hood short deck’ profile. The 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS coupe is coated in a dark blue paint job that was completed approximately five years ago, including the roof which originally had a vinyl top that was removed during the restoration process. It rides on its original SS wheels and all the chrome accents appear to be in excellent condition. The interior is also adorned in blue and has seating for four adults. A wooden-rimmed steering wheel with a Chevrolet emblem faces the driver, and the original Chevrolet in-dash radio is also present. The four-speed manual transmission is operated using a uniquely shaped Hurst shift knob.
The Chevelle was available with a variety of six- and eight-cylinder gasoline engines from Chevrolet, and this 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS coupe is fitted with the largest engine, the 7.4L (454ci) big-block V8. Officially, the engine was rated at 350hp, but it is believed to produce closer to 390hp in reality. Although the car originally came with a 454 engine, it was swapped for a different one during the restoration process. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The powertrain has undergone significant modifications, such as the addition of aluminum heads and headers, installation of dual electric fans for the radiator, rebuilding of the original transmission, installation of a new gearing unit at the rear, and custom-made upper and lower control arms. Despite the car originally having factory front disc brakes and rear drums, the braking system has been upgraded to a power brake setup with disc brakes on all four wheels.
